In 1966, two young hikers, Douglas Tompkins and Kenneth "Hap" Klopp, decided to go into business for themselves and start a mountaineering store. Two years after a humble start as a simple retailer and mail order company of backpacking needs and climbing equipment in the North Beach area, The North Face moved to the Berkeley area of San Francisco and started their adventure into the designing and manufacturing world.

The logo was created, an almost-perfect quarter circle with two adjacent lines following its curvature. This is a stylized rendition of "Half Dome," a granite monolith found in Yosemite National Park.

The 1970s saw a beginning of a cult following as enthusiastic outdoors people began preferring their products above all others. That was when they decided to start sponsoring expeditions to places not usually visited, and became known for their mantra. "Never Stop Exploring".

The first expedition was in Alaska, with Ned Gillette and his team making a traverse on skis ?that took thirty days and 300 miles across the Brooks Range. The next one was actually the first North Face-sponsored expedition when a new route was discovered by legendary rock climbers Jim Bridwell and Kim Schmitz up the biggest wall in Yosemite.

The North Face adds another first with the extraordinary design of the geodesic dome tent, the Oval Intention. This tent puts the pup tent permanently in the dog house.

In 1975, The North Face inaugurated a tongue-in-cheek award for the organization that contributed the most towards ecological destruction and gave the Ice Nine Award to the Atomic Energy Commission.

The North Face branched out into skiing equipment, and of course did not add any ordinary skiwear to their collection. Extreme ski wear came into play, and these were the clothes that the extreme skiers became known for wearing. The company was known for there well thought-out collection of ski wear, outerwear that could take any extremes, and basic camping equipment of sleeping bags, tents, and packs.

Over the next few years, they had forged new trails for protective clothing in extreme weather conditions, pioneering the successful use of neoprene for ice climbing and Gore-Tex for protection against cold weather.

They further cement their stand towards nature conservation when the company co-founds the Outdoor Industry Conservation Alliance in 1989.

The 1990s saw The North Face becoming a very popular brand worldwide when it started producing more types of equipment for the great outdoors. Tekware was introduced at this time, and it gave a lot of outdoors people, mainly hikers and climbers terrific gear with functions that only they could think of. For the first time, clothing could be used for any outdoor activity yet remain relatively dry, allowing moisture to dissipate quickly. Plus, it is much more durable than the natural cotton clothing that was so prevalent at the time could ever be.

The now-ubiquitous half dome yellow tent began to pop up more often, and this very popularity was what allowed it to be featured on sports channels all over the world. The little company was fast becoming a household name.

Towards the end of the decade, another line was added that put The North Face on the map. Their trekking and trail-running shoes were launched in a bid to give athletes and explorers the ultimate comfort while they are setting out on their next adventure.

In 2009, The North Face partnered with and is actively supporting Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy (BICEP) ?in order to change business policies and prevent climate change.

Ski Wear and Climbing Wear produced by The North Face today is protected from moisture with a new technology ¨C Hyvent. Constructed as a waterproof yet breathable fabric, it is the toughest product on the market now that resists a torrent of water after twenty launderings.

Today, The North Face is a formidable name, just like its namesake. It has grown from a little company into a giant in the world of outdoorswear. Turn on a channel that features the outdoors and you'll be sure to see The North Face's products at one time or another. It's something to be expected, since they are still the first choice when to comes to the people that they understand the most ¨C the explorers, climbers, mountaineers, endurance runners, snowboarders, and extreme skiers. These are the people that make up The North Face.
